Environmental Awareness

The earth we abuse and the living things we kill will, in the end, take their revenge; for in exploiting their presence we are diminishing our future
                                                            -Marya Mannes

Environmental awareness is very important.  Many people forget how important Mother Nature really is.  There is an old saying that says, take only pictures, leave only footprints; however, that statement does not seem to apply anymore.  More and more people are forgetting the beauty of Mother Nature.  Mother earth can supply only so much before she stops supplying altogether.  Mountains will soon be without trees and our ponds will soon be without water.  The abuse that people have with our natural elements is ridiculous.  People are destroying more trees than can be planted and abusing fresh water like it will never end.  Pretty soon we will not have these natural resources anymore.  Ralph Waldo Emerson states in his writing that “the stars awaken a certain reverence, because though always present, they are inaccessible; but all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence” (Emerson, 2010, p.562).  If more people could see the beauty of our mother earth, then maybe they would leave it alone.  “To speak truly, few adult persons can see nature” (Emerson, 2010, p. 563).  This is the problem, people are blinded by other things such as greed and do not think of the harm they are causing our environment.  If people would stop to think and actually looked around, they would see that not a lot places have much room.
“The natural world in the year 2001 is everywhere disappearing before our eyes-cut to pieces, mowed down, plowed under, gobbled up, replaced by human artifacts” (Wilson, 2010, p.566). Mr. Edward O. Wilson wrote in his letter that the world around us is quickly shrinking.  He states the population is to blame for the decrease of our natural resources.  Back in the 1840, there were nowhere near a billion people.  This is true.  The natural world is dying before us as the population grows.  What will happen to our four legged friends?  They soon will have no homes.  The polar bears will soon have no Ice; hence, our forest creatures will have no trees to call home as well.  Our planet seems to be paying the price for the growing population.  Nobody likes to take blame as well.  It is a sad world to live in and will continue to be that way unless we as the people take a stand and start protecting our natural resources.  We need our natural elements around when other man-made functions fail.  The natural element was here before we were and if the human population continues to grow, they will be diminished before others get to enjoy them.  The trees provide shade, wind and home for animals. The water provides a source of energy, growth for vegetation and home to marine animals. Most importantly, earth, it provides a home for all things live and human.  If we do not take care of it, it will soon be extinct.
